PrecisionCNCmillingforautomotivecomponents
Overview:
Automotive manufacturing demands extreme precision and consistency for engine, transmission, and drivetrain parts. This project restructured high-speed multi-axis CNC milling setups to eliminate thermal drift, increase surface finish quality, and drastically reduce lead times for complex engine components.
Approach:
We integrated high-speed 5-axis CNC machining centers paired with on-machine Renishaw optical probing for in-process tool compensation. Advanced trochoidal toolpath strategies reduced tool wear by 300% and ensured vibration-free surface finishes.
Technical Specifications:
- Material: Hardened Cr-Mo Alloy Steel & 7075 Aluminum
- Positioning Tolerance: ±0.005 mm (5 microns)
- Surface Roughness: Ra 0.4 µm (Mirror Finish)
- Spindle Speed: 24,000 RPM through-spindle coolant
- Quality Inspection: Zeiss 3D CMM & 100% Laser Scanning
Results:
The updated 5-axis CNC methodology reduced automotive component production cycles by 54% while achieving a 99.8% First Pass Yield rate. Tooling costs dropped by over 40%, easily passing stringent ISO/TS 16949 audit benchmarks.
